FLORIAN ROEPER
Artisan | Designer | Craftsman
The Journey
Florian Roeper founded Studio Roeper in 2003, fresh out of California College of the Arts with a BFA in furniture and sculpture, entering a market in the midst of transformation. The studio furniture movement—championed by masters like Sam Maloof and Wendell Castle—had created a vibrant art furniture ecosystem for decades. But as galleries closed and the collector base aged, Roeper recognized the need to evolve.
Rather than chase trends, he developed a design language that bridged artistic integrity with timeless, approachable forms. Twenty-two years later, that vision remains the foundation of every piece he creates.
One of the largest inventories of premium California Black Walnut slabs in Northern California
The Material
Roeper's work centers on California Black Walnut—a material he has come to know intimately. He personally sources, salvages, and mills fallen trees from throughout Northern California, transforming what would otherwise be lost into one of the largest inventories of premium walnut slabs in the region.
Each board carries its own history: the scars of lightning strikes, the irregular grain patterns from growing on a hillside, the rich color variations that no stain could replicate. Roeper has learned to see beyond the imperfections to the beauty within—a philosophy the Japanese call wabi-sabi, though he arrived at it through years of working the wood itself.
Hand-finishing each surface using traditional techniques refined over two decades
The Process
Every table begins with selection. Roeper walks clients through his slab inventory, discussing grain patterns, natural edge characteristics, and how the wood will interact with their space. Once the perfect piece is chosen, he designs the base—typically bronze or steel—to complement the walnut's organic movement with clean, architectural lines.
The fabrication process takes 10-14 weeks. Roeper mills, joins, sands, and finishes each surface by hand, employing techniques refined over two decades. The joinery is traditional; the aesthetic is contemporary. What emerges is a singular piece that bears the unmistakable mark of human craft—imperfect, authentic, and impossible to replicate.
"Living with exceptional pieces enhances our quality of life."
